Medroxyprogesterone 5%

Composition:
Each ml suspension contains:
50 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate.
Properties:
Medroxyprogesterone acts centrally on the hypophysis. Ovulation and the symptoms of oestrus are prevented.
Indications:
The prevention of oestrus.
Dosage and administration:
The product should be given by subcutaneous injection only.
Bitches: 2 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate/kg body weight to a maximum of 60 mg total dose per animal. Treatment is best given in
the second half of anoestrus and repeated every six months.
Queens: 25 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate/animal. Treatment should be repeated every 3 - 4 months during the luteal phase of the
cycle.
Withdrawal periods:
Not applicable.
Contra-Indications:
- Animals in the pro-oestrus, oestrus or metoestrus phases of the cycle
- Infections of the genital tract
- Immature animals
- Pregnant animals
- Animals intended for breeding
- Mammary tumors, diabetes mellitus and obese animals
Side-effects:
- Hair discoloration or loss of hair may be seen at the site of injection
- Stimulation of the proliferation of existing mammary tumors may occur as can temporary gains in weight
- Stimulation of the secretory activity of the endometrium can result in cystic endometrial hyperplasia or pyometra. These risks are reduced if the recommended times for treatment are followed and lower doses are used
