| Composition: Each tablet contains 5 mg prednisolone acetate. Properties: Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid with antiphlogistic and anti-allergic activity. When used at the recommended doses and as short term treatment, the drug has a negligible effect on salt and fluid balance. Indications: Inflammatory orthopaedic conditions such as arthritis and osteoarthritis, tendinitis, tendovaginitis, arthroses, myositis and synovitis. Respiratory conditions of allergic origin such as bronchial asthma. Skin conditions of allergic origin such as allergic dermatitis and dermatoses accompanied by severe itching. Auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or SLE. Severe, acute infections such as skin infections, meningitis, encephalitis and eye infections, all in combination with suitable antibiotic treatment. Dosage and administration: Orally. In general, the dose for a dog is 1 to 3 daily and for a cat 0.5 - 1 daily. - acute conditions: 0.5 - 4 mg prednisolone acetate/kg body weight per day - chronic conditions: 2 - 4 mg prednisolone acetate/kg body weight per day for 3 days, then 1 - 2 mg prednisolone acetate/kg body weight per day for 5 days followed by 1 - 2 mg prednisolone acetate/kg body weight every other day. The dose is then halved, at intervals of one week, until the minimum effective dose is reached. On account of variation in usual daily routine, dogs may be treated at around 8 o'clock in the morning and cats at around 10 o'clock at night. Contra-Indications: Virus infections, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, heart and kidney dysfunction, fungal infections, corneal ulcers, burns. High dosages should not be administered to pregnant animals. Side-effects: Abortion during the last trimester of pregnancy. Progressively decreased resistance to infections in general: septicaemia and septic cystitis, masking of underlying infections. Immunosuppression: adrenal suppression in cases of prolonged therapy and adrenal insufficiency when the animal is additionally stressed or when treatment is suddenly stopped. Also: katabolism followed by muscle atrophy, myopathy and delayed wound healing, osteoporosis, inhibition of growth in long bones, skin atrophy, diabetes mellitus, polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, ulceration of the gastro-intestinal system, pancreatitis, hyperlipidaemia, increased lipolysis, fatty infiltration of the liver due to steroid hepatopathy, inhibition of the hypothalamus-hypophysis-adrenal cortex system, decreased thyroid activity, increased parathyroid activity, Cushing's syndrome.
